The bottle should be strong enough to remain intact in hands, so beer or vodka bottles are better.
Champagne bottles are usually too strong to break, however in Spain even jam jars were used.
In some recommendations there is advise to cut through the bottle with a glass cutter but in this case you should be very careful.
